On September 4, 2015, an outstanding scholar of Korean studies and Orientalism, leading researcher of the Department of Korea and Mongolia, Candidate of Historical Sciences Yuri Vasilyevich Vanin, turned 85.
Yu. V. Vanin is a recognized authority on the history and current situation of Korea, author of numerous studies on the historical past and current problems of the Korean Peninsula.
Yuri Vasilyevich was born on September 4, 1930 in the village of Pissovo, Lev-Tolstovsky district, Ryazan region. Father Vanin Vasily Iosifovich, an engineer-economist; mother Marina Mikhailovna, a housewife. In 1949-1954, he studied at the History Department of Moscow State University as a member of the first Korean group in the history of the university under the leadership of M. N. Pak. In 1957-1960, he was a post-graduate student of the Institute of Internal Affairs of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Since November 1960 - Junior researcher, since December 1965-Senior Researcher of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences (then - the Institute of Asian Peoples). Since February 1985-Head of the Department. The Korea Sector of the Department of Socialist Asian Countries. From 1987 to 2005, he was the head of this department, which was transformed in 1992 into the Department of Korea and Mongolia.
Thanks to the successful and purposeful leadership of Yu. V. Vanin, the research team of the Department developed a wide range of research on Korean and Mongolian studies and thereby made a significant contribution to the research work of the Institute. However, even after leaving the post of head of the Korea and Mongolia Department, Yu. V. Vanin actively participates in the multi-faceted activities of the department's staff.
All of Yu. V. Vanin's conscious life was devoted to studying the history, culture and politics of Korea, which he considered his second spiritual homeland, not without reason. He is the author of such already classic works as" The Agrarian System of feudal Korea "and chapters in the fundamental two-volume work" History of Korea (from ancient times to the present day) " (Moscow, 1974).
Yuri Vasilyevich became the initiator of a new unique project of the multi-volume series "Russian Korean Studies in the past and present". On his initiative and with his active participation, eight books of this series have been published in recent years. Yu. V. Vanin is one of the initiators of the series "Russian Koreans". He shows great interest in the life of the Korean diaspora in Russia. For more than 10 years, the hero of the day has been working as an editor of the Korean diaspora's Bomminren organ, Unity magazine.
Yu. V. Vanin is a world-renowned scientist, whose works have been widely recognized in our country and abroad. He is a constant participant of All-Russian and international conferences, symposia on the modern development of Korean studies and topical issues of the Korean Peninsula. Scientific conferences dedicated to the June 1926 demonstration in Korea, the 50th anniversary of the Korean War of 1950-1953, were conceived and implemented under his leadership.
His active scientific and socio-political activities, including as a vice-president of the Russian Society for Friendship and Cultural Relations with the DPRK, were highly appreciated abroad. He was awarded the Medal and Order of Friendship of the 1st and 2nd degrees of the DPRK, and was elected an honorary Doctor of the Institute of International Studies of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences.
Yu. V. Vanin's research interests have always been extremely broad: socio-economic problems of feudal Korea, the Korean national liberation movement, the history of Korea's liberation from the Japanese colonial yoke, the tragic split of Korea, the Korean War of 1950-1953, etc. A special place in the works of the orientalist is occupied by the study of the DPRK, its domestic and foreign policy on the world stage, the relationship between the North and the South in the struggle for peaceful unification of Korea. Yu.V. Vanin has trained many researchers, undergraduates and postgraduates.
