Slavics are the largest ethnic group in Europe, united by the similarity of languages, common origin, and similar cultural traditions. They speak languages of the Slavic branch of the Indo-European language family. Today, Slavic peoples form the basis of the population of many countries in Europe, and their total population exceeds three hundred million people.

Origin and Proto-Home

The question of where the Slavic community originated remains a subject of scientific debate to this day. According to one widely accepted version, the ancestors of the Slavs emerged from the Indo-European community in the second millennium BC and settled on vast territories from the Dnieper in the east to the Oder in the west, from the Carpathians in the south to the Baltic Sea in the north.

Some scientists associate the proto-home of the Slavs with the basin of the Vistula and the Oder, while others with the territory between the Oder and the Dnieper. Academician Alexey Shakhmatov, for example, believed that ancient Slavs originated in the upper reaches of the Vistula, on the banks of the Tisa, and on the slopes of the Carpathians. Studies of ancient DNA published in leading scientific journals in 2025 show that significant genetic changes occurred in Central Europe between the 6th and 8th centuries AD, associated with the spread of Slavic groups.

Ancient Names and First Mentions

In ancient written sources, Slavs are mentioned under various names. Roman historians Pliny the Elder and Tacitus called them Veneti, reporting that they were a great people inhabiting a vast territory from the Carpathians to the Baltic Sea. Greek historian Herodotus, describing the inhabitants of the lands of modern Belarus, called them Nevari and Budini.

The self-name Slaveni (or Slavs) first appears in historical sources at the beginning of the 6th century. It is recorded by Byzantine historians Procopius and Jordan around 550. The origin of this self-name remains a subject of controversy to this day. There are two main versions:

  • From the word \"slava\". This version, popular among the Slavs themselves, interprets the ethnonym as \"glorious\", \"famous\".
  • From the word \"slovo\". According to this hypothesis, \"Slaveni\" means \"speaking in a comprehensible language\", unlike their neighbors-the \"Germans\", who were called so because their speech was incomprehensible.

Linguists note that neither of these versions has strict scientific confirmation, and the question of the etymology of the ethnonym remains open. The name Sklaveni in Greek pronunciation was probably borrowed from the local tribal name \"Slaveni\".

Three Branches of Slavicness

As a result of the settlement, which became particularly active in the 5th-7th centuries, three large groups were formed from the common Slavic community:

  • Western Slavs: Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Lusatians. They live in Central Europe.
  • Southern Slavs: Bulgarians, Serbs, Croats, Slovenes, Macedonians, Montenegrins, Bosnians. They settled on the Balkan Peninsula.
  • Eastern Slavs: Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians. In ancient times, their tribal ancestors were Polans, Drevlyans, Severians, Krivichs, Vyatichs, and others mentioned in chronicles. It was the Eastern Slavs who became the basis for the formation of the Ancient Russian state with its center in Kiev.

Language and Culture

The linguistic and cultural closeness of Slavic peoples has been evident for many centuries. In the 9th century, Byzantine educators Cyril and Methodius created the Slavic alphabet, which gave a powerful impetus to the development of Slavic literacy and culture. Among the eastern and most southern Slavs, Christianity by the Greek-Byzantine rite was established, while among the western Slavs - by the Roman-Catholic rite.

Before the adoption of Christianity, Slavs were pagans. Their religious beliefs included the cult of nature, veneration of ancestors, and belief in numerous gods, among whom the main was the god of thunder Perun. An important place was occupied by the cult of ancestors: the deceased were considered protectors of the tribe, and they were remembered during special rituals, many of which, such as Maslenitsa and Ivan Kupala Day, have survived in transformed form until today.
