No exact statistics exist on the number of mice on the planet. These small rodents lead a secretive lifestyle, reproduce rapidly, and inhabit virtually everywhere, making an accurate count impossible. All existing figures are scientific estimates and extrapolations. The order Rodentia includes about one thousand five hundred species, accounting for nearly forty percent of all known mammal species.

Worldwide Population

Estimates of the total population of mice and rats worldwide vary greatly. According to some sources, the total number of rodents on the planet exceeds three hundred billion individuals, which is about five times the world's population. Other estimates suggest a figure of about one hundred and fifty billion, assuming that only in India there are around fifty billion rodents. More modest calculations, based on the ratio \"four rodents for one person,\" give a figure of about thirty billion.

Distribution by Continent

Mice inhabit all continents except Antarctica. The highest concentration is observed in regions with high human population density and developed agriculture, as these rodents are closely associated with human activity. The origin of all species of the mouse genus Mus is in Eurasia and Africa, from where they spread around the world with humans.

Asia

Asia leads in absolute mouse population. This is due to the region's large population, favorable climate, and extensive agriculture. In India alone, according to various estimates, there are from fifty billion rodents. China also has billions of mice and rats. The greatest diversity of rodent species is observed in southern West Siberia and the mountains of Central Asia.

North America

In the United States, the rodent population is estimated at hundreds of millions of individuals. High concentrations are noted in large cities, where mice find abundant food and shelter. The house mouse was brought to the New World with European settlers and has widely spread across the continent.

Europe

Mice are also numerous in European countries, although their population is smaller than in Asia. The house mouse is one of the most widespread mammal species on the continent. Genetic studies show that European populations were formed as a result of migration from the Middle East and South Asia.

South America, Africa, and Australia

Mice are also widely distributed on these continents, especially in tropical and temperate zones. Africa is considered one of the ancient centers of origin of mice. In Australia and Oceania, their population is smaller due to isolation and the characteristics of ecosystems, but invasive species pose a serious problem for local fauna.

Antarctica

Mice do not inhabit Antarctica due to the extremely cold climate. This is the only continent where the population of these rodents is completely absent.

Why It's So Difficult to Count

The main difficulties in counting are related to the nocturnal and secretive lifestyle of mice, their ability to quickly migrate in search of food and shelter, and their enormous rate of reproduction. A single female can bring offspring several times a year, making the population highly dynamic. Moreover, marking and recapture methods used to estimate population are poorly scalable to entire continents.
