Matei Safonov is a Russian goalkeeper who is the main goalkeeper for the Russian national team and French PSG (or another top club) in 2026. We tell you about his career, playing style, and place in world football.

Career

Born in 1999 in Krasnodar. A graduate of the Krasnodar academy. Has been playing for the main team since 2017. In 2020, he became the captain of Krasnodar at 21 years old! In 2023, he moved to PSG for 20 million euros (the most expensive goalkeeper from Russia). Since 2021, he has been the main goalkeeper of the Russian national team. In 2026, he will participate in the World Cup (if Russia is admitted).

Safonov is one of the few Russians who successfully play in a top championship.

Playing Style

Footwork: excellent ball control (can pass the ball 30 meters). Exit from the goal: boldly goes for a tackle. Reaction: fast, especially on follow-up shots. Play on the line: reliable, but sometimes misses unnecessary goals. Psychology: calm, does not panic. Charisma: talks to the defense, leads.

Weaknesses: sometimes delays the exit, there are losses of concentration.

Achievements

With Krasnodar — silver of the Russian championship (2021, 2022). With PSG — champion of France (2024, 2025), winner of the French Cup (2025). Personally: Best goalkeeper of Russia (2021, 2022, 2023). Participant of the Champions League (twice). In 2025, he was recognized as the second goalkeeper of the year in France after Donnarumma.

In the national team: more than 50 matches.

Comparison with Legends

Safonov is compared to Igor Akinfeev (just as calm, reliable). But Akinfeev was more charismatic. He is compared to Manuel Neuer (footwork, exits). But Safonov is slower than the German. He is a typical modern goalkeeper who can catch and pass. The main difference: Safonov is a right-hander, but plays well with his left foot.

Future

In 2026, Safonov will be 27 years old — the peak of his career. He will be the main goalkeeper in the national team at the 2026 World Cup (if Russia is admitted). He may move to Bayern or Manchester United (rumors). Can he win the Golden Ball? It's unlikely (goalkeepers rarely receive it). But to become the best goalkeeper in the world — yes. The obstacle: high competition (Courtois, Donnarumma, Alisson).

Safonov is the pride of Russian football. Let's see how he performs on the world stage.
