Among strong black chess players, there are indeed very few — this is not the result of some genetic prohibition, but the consequence of historical, economic, and social reasons. To date, out of approximately two thousand grandmasters in the world, only four have African ancestry.

Facts about black grandmasters

  • Maurice Ashley. The first black grandmaster in history. He received the title in 1999. Born in Jamaica, raised in New York. Ashley notes that when he became a grandmaster, there were only about five hundred holders of this title in the world, and he remains the only African American to reach this level to this day.
  • Amon Simutowe. The first grandmaster from countries south of the Sahara. Born in Zambia, received the title in 2007. His path is unique: he had no coach, no books — only chess magazines sent by his brother from England.
  • Pontus Carlsson. A Swedish grandmaster of Colombian origin who also publicly spoke about racism in the chess world.
  • Brevinenton Hardaway. A young American chess player who recently became the second African American to receive the title of grandmaster at the age of fifteen.

Why are there so few: main reasons

The situation is explained by a complex of factors, not a single cause.

Historical heritage and the lack of traditions

Anatoly Karpov explained this by saying that many African countries gained independence only in the 1960s, and the level of their educational systems was insufficient to create a full-fledged chess infrastructure — a system of training and competitions. Chess requires centuries-old traditions that have been formed in Europe and Russia for centuries, but did not develop in Africa due to the colonial past.

Socio-economic barriers

Maurice Ashley points to a combination of reasons: socio-economic and cultural. Chess is an expensive sport at the highest level. You need coaches, trips to tournaments, books, computers for preparation. For a talented child from a poor family, these are almost insurmountable obstacles. Ashley himself noted that chess was not profitable for an intelligent black child who could dedicate his life to it.

Cultural stereotypes and racism

Chess has historically been perceived as a white sport. Black chess players have faced racism and microaggressions. Pontus Carlsson said that he was given bananas and made monkey noises at tournaments in Europe. This creates a hostile environment and drives away potential players.

The lack of role models

Maurice Ashley explains this as follows: part of the reason why there have not been truly great black chess players lies in the fact that there have not been truly great black chess players. Children need a role model to emulate. When there is no visible prospect, it is difficult to believe that it is possible.

What is changing?

The situation is changing, although slowly. Chess is gaining popularity in Africa. New names are emerging, such as Fiona Mutesi from Uganda, who, according to Karpov, reached chess heights thanks to natural talent despite not being able to read or write. Maurice Ashley founded a scholarship to support underrepresented players to give them a chance to break into the elite.

In short: the absence of black chess players in the elite is not a question of ability, but a question of access to resources, historical conditions, and cultural barriers.
