Despite the horror stories about the dangers of smoking, teenagers still pick up cigarettes. Vapes, IQOS, and e-cigarettes have only complicated the situation. Why do children start smoking in 2026? It's almost always a combination of factors.
By the age of 12-14, belonging to a group becomes more important than health. If the group smokes, not smoking means becoming a 'black sheep'. A teenager smokes to avoid teasing. Also, smoking is seen as a sign of coolness: 'I'm grown-up, I can afford nicotine'.
Smoking parents, older brothers, bloggers who smoke on camera (even vapes) — all these are models of behavior. If the father smokes and doesn't drop dead, cognitive dissonance doesn't arise in the child.
Teens experience immense stress: exams, first love, bullying. Smoking gives the illusion of relaxation (nicotine actually stimulates the nervous system, but the act of smoking is like a placebo). 'A smoke break' becomes a legal way to leave the class and catch your breath.
In 2026, teenagers start with POD systems (single-use vapes) with sweet flavors. They seem harmless. But then it turns out that it's sad without nicotine.
How to fight it? Banning is useless. You need to set a personal example (don't smoke yourself), talk without lectures, and provide legal ways to relieve stress (sports, hobbies).
