Paradox of Belarusian Beach Soccer Success

Belarus is a landlocked country without access to the sea. Its largest water bodies are rivers and lakes, not salty waves. Beach soccer in Belarus? Absurd? However, the Belarusian beach soccer team is one of the strongest in Europe and the world. It regularly qualifies for the final stages of European and world championships, defeating traditional favorites like the Portuguese, Spanish, and Italians. How did a country where snow lies for half a year and there are almost no sandy beaches achieve such success? A paradox, but there is an explanation.

No Sea, But Sand

Belarusians do not wait for favors from nature. They build artificial sand fields for training. The first such field appeared in Minsk at the Dynamo stadium (now not in use). Then, a specialized center was built in Borovaya (a suburb of Minsk) with a covered arena and an open field. The sand is brought from quarries, sifted, and moistened. Training can be conducted year-round, despite the cold (the temperature in the covered arena is maintained above zero). By 2026, there will be 5 sand fields in Belarus: in Minsk, Homel, Brest, Grodno, and Vitebsk. This is enough for development.

System: From Children to Pros

The Belarusian Beach Soccer Federation, led by the president (ex-football player Sergey Borovsky), has bet on systematicity. They have created children's academies in Minsk, Homel, and Brest. Children start playing beach soccer at 8 years old, combining it with classic football or futsal. Regional tournaments among young people (U-14, U-16, U-18) are held. The best players are promoted to the second team. The senior national team is composed of players who have passed through this school. The team coach (Nikolai Vitolovsky) has been working with the team for years, ensuring teamwork.

Tactics and Style: Belarusian Flank

Unlike the Brazilians, who rely on dribbling, Belarusians play a forceful, disciplined beach soccer. Their style is high pressing, long passes to attackers, shots from outside the penalty area. Belarusians are known for their goalkeepers (such as Igor Bristel, who was recognized as the best goalkeeper in Europe). The goalkeeper school is a separate pride: training on reaction, footwork, ball striking. Field players are valued for speed and the ability to shoot while falling ("bicycle"). Belarusians are not afraid to play aggressively, which often disrupts the rhythm of southern teams.

Stars of Belarusian Beach Soccer

Igor Bristel is a living legend. He has played over 200 matches for the national team. Ilya Tereshkov is a multiple bomber, known for his penalty goals. Yevgeny Hayduk is the captain, the engine of the team. Young stars: Valery Markovich, Andrey Demidov. These names are known in Europe. In 2024, Belarusians finished 5th at the World Cup, sensationally defeating Brazil in the group (7:6). It was a triumph.

Financing and Support

Success requires money. Belarusian beach soccer is sponsored by the Development Bank of the Republic of Belarus, the "Krivitsa" brewery, sports stores. The Ministry of Sports also helps. Players' salaries are modest (compared to professional football players), but they receive bonuses for victories. Players also work as coaches in children's schools. The national team travels to training camps in Turkey, Egypt, and the UAE in winter.

Competition Within the Country

The Belarusian Beach Soccer Championship has been held since 2008. 8-10 teams participate. Minsk's "Fort" and "Grodno" dominate. Players from regions also have a chance to show themselves. Internal competition raises the level. The best strikers receive prizes. Matches are broadcast on television (Belarus 5). This heats up interest.

Influence on Big Football

Belarusian players in big football sometimes switch to beach soccer after the end of their careers. For example, Alexander Kulchyi (ex-player of the national team) played beach soccer. This enhances the prestige. Many note that playing beach soccer improves coordination, striking technique, which is useful in the classics as well.

Paradox as Inspiration

The success of the Belarusians shows that beach soccer does not need an ocean. It needs will, system, sand, and faith. This is an example for other countries without the sea (Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Kazakhstan). Belarus proves that even from the depths, one can become a leader. Paradoxically, but a fact.
