You can fly upside down, spin, perform acrobatic figures — and all this in complete safety, inside a transparent tube. This is not science fiction, this is an air tunnel. What started as a training device for the military and paratroopers has today become a separate sport, a fitness trend, and even an entertainment industry. But most importantly, the air tunnel fundamentally changes parachute sport, making it more accessible, safer, and technologically advanced. How exactly? And what does the future hold for this symbiosis of wind and man?
The history of vertical air tunnels began in the 1960s in the United States, where they were used for training military paratroopers and astronauts. Back then, they were cumbersome, expensive, and inaccessible installations. The idea was simple: create a stream of air that lifts a person up, simulating free fall. In the 20th century, this remained more of a technical novelty than a mass phenomenon.
However, in the 21st century, everything changed. Commercial air tunnels began to appear all over the world, transforming from specialized trainers to accessible entertainment centers. Today, you can find air tunnels in shopping centers, amusement parks, and even mobile versions for events. According to research, the global recreational air tunnel market was valued at 1.2 billion dollars in 2024, and is expected to grow to 3.8 billion by 2033.
For a professional paratrooper, the air tunnel has long ceased to be an attraction. It is the main training tool, without which it is difficult to imagine modern preparation. What is its magic?
Firstly, **time**. In a real jump, free fall lasts only 50–60 seconds. In one session in an air tunnel, you can get 5, 10, or even 20 minutes of pure flying time. This means that instead of 10 jumps to practice one element, you can do this in one visit to the tube. The time and money saved are enormous.
Secondly, **safety and repeatability**. In an air tunnel, there is no wind, clouds, turbulence, or seasonal restrictions. An athlete can repeat the same movement over and over again, mastering it to perfection, without the risk associated with a real jump. The instructor stands nearby and corrects mistakes literally on the spot.
Thirdly, **video analysis**. Today, every training flight is recorded, and the athlete, together with the coach, reviews the recording frame by frame, correcting the slightest inaccuracies in body position. This allows achieving perfect technique much faster.
For team disciplines such as group acrobatics (RW), training in an air tunnel has become an essential part of preparation. Here, synchronization and interaction in the air are practiced, which is impossible to \"fly\" in real jumps due to their cost and limited time.
The air tunnel is not just a fan and a tube. Today, it is a high-tech complex that continues to evolve. One of the main directions is **integration with virtual reality (VR)**. VR simulators help lower the psychological barrier to the first jump and allow for practicing complex maneuvers in an even more controlled environment. There are even fully VR-integrated air tunnels.
The structures themselves are also developing. Mobile air tunnels are being introduced, which can be installed at events and festivals. Air tunnels are becoming larger and more powerful: for example, in Chelyabinsk in 2026, \"RMK-Arena\" opened with a tube 20 meters high, and there are installations in the world with a flight zone diameter of 10 meters and a height of 25 meters.
Safety devices (AAD) and altimeters for real jumps are also being improved in parallel. Automatic activation devices are now more accessible and reliable, deploying the reserve parachute if the pilot does not do so themselves. And the latest **zero-porosity canopy fabrics**, practically not allowing air to pass through, make parachutes lighter, stronger, and more precise in control.
Today, the air tunnel is not just a trainer but a full-fledged sport. The Russian Parachute Sports Federation is developing air tunnel disciplines, where athletes compete in special vertical aerodynamic tunnels, individually and in teams.
Competitions are held in the format of performing the maximum number of elements within a limited time. For example, Irkutsk native Alina Zimina became the champion of Russia by performing 44 maneuvers in 35 seconds. In team disciplines, synchronization, accuracy, and aesthetics of movements are evaluated.
Records are also being set. In 2026, Tumenskaya Viktor Kozlov and Sergey Dmitriev set the record of Russia for the duration of continuous flight in an air tunnel — 120 minutes. In paragliding, this time corresponds to more than 400 kilometers of free fall.
World cups and championships in aerodynamic acrobatics are also held, and the spectacle of this sport attracts more and more spectators.
What does the future hold for air tunnels and parachute sport in the coming decades? The prospects look impressive.
Firstly, **massification**. The indoor skydiving market is growing at double-digit rates. Air tunnels will appear in new cities and countries, becoming part of everyday culture. This will attract more beginners to parachute sport who already have basic flying skills in the tube.
Secondly, **personalized training**. Artificial intelligence and big data analysis will allow for the creation of individual training programs, correcting the technique of each athlete with maximum accuracy.
Thirdly, **integration with other disciplines**. Air tunnels are already used not only for paratroopers but also for astronauts, pilots, and for conducting aerodynamic tests. In the future, this range may expand.
Finally, **technological breakthroughs**. The appearance of new materials, more efficient fans, and flow control systems will make flights even smoother, safer, and more accessible. Perhaps we will see air tunnels that can be installed directly on stadiums for spectacular competitions.
The air tunnel is not just technology; it is a bridge between the dream of flight and reality. It makes parachute sport safer, more effective, and more accessible. And as long as the wind blows, people will learn to fly.
