Why do children laugh? What do they find funny? Children's humor is not just "silly jokes." It is a tool for understanding the world, socialization, and protection. We tell you how humor changes with age, what jokes children like, and how not to miss the moment when a child starts to joke about "dark humor".
The main source of laughter: surprise. For example, dad put on a sock on his hand or the clown fell down. Also, physical humor: farts, falls, sliding down a hill. Sounds are funny: "beep beep", "meow". Also, hide and seek, tickling. Children laugh when adults repeat their actions (monkeying around). What is not funny: sarcasm, irony, complex jokes.
Example: "How to call a cow for lunch? Mu-u-u!"
Absurd jokes appear: "Does the duck have a tail? And dad? And the chair?". Logical inconsistencies: "The dog barks, and the cat says 'meow' — it's funny if the cat doesn't do that". Bathroom humor: feces, pee, farts. This is a way to explore the body. Exaggerations: "I ate 100 candies!". Also, funny words: "hoho", "smily".
Example: "Why doesn't the hedgehog sink? Because the needles are a lifebuoy!"
Jokes with a twist: "What does the watchman do when a sparrow sits on his head? Sleeps". Riddles with an unexpected answer: "A pear hangs, can't be eaten? It's a light bulb". They start to understand simple irony. Comical situations: the teacher fell into a puddle. Pranks ("your shoelace is untied" — turns out — laughter).
Important: children can be offended by a joke if it is aimed at them.
Dark humor (death, illness, disasters). This is a way to cope with fears. Sarcasm and mockery of adults, teachers. Internet memes (tiktoks, reels). Absurd situations: "A bear is walking in the forest, sees — a car is on fire. Gets in it and burns. Why? Just". Double meanings, euphemisms.
Teens also joke about sex, but often awkwardly.
At the age of 4-7, children discover their bodies. They are interested in everything related to excretions. Jokes about feces are a way to explore the boundaries of what is allowed. Parents blush, and the child is happy with the reaction. This is also a way to unite with peers (shared laughter).
Do not ban. Just indicate where it is okay to joke (at home) and where it is not (at school, in guests).
Do not mock. Even if the joke is silly. Laugh together (honestly). If the joke is offensive ("mom is dumb"), say: "I don't like it, you hurt me". Discuss why the joke is funny. This develops a sense of humor. Teach them to distinguish when it is okay to joke and when it is not (funerals, hospitals). If a child jokes about death (at 10 years old) — do not panic. Talk about fears. If he constantly offends others with "jokes" — it is bullying.
Humor is a sign of intelligence. The more complex the joke, the smarter the child. Therefore, enjoy children's jokes. Laugh with them. And don't forget to joke yourself. Because laughter unites.
