Dogs fart just like humans — through the anus, releasing gases that form in the digestive tract. However, this process has its own characteristics in dogs, related to their anatomy and diet.

Why Dogs Fart

The main reason is the swallowing of air and fermentation in the intestines. Dogs often eat quickly, swallowing a large amount of air along with their food. This air either comes out through belching or moves further along the digestive tract and exits as gas.

The second source is intestinal bacteria. When food is digested, especially food rich in fiber or carbohydrates, bacteria in the large intestine release gases: nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide. It is these gases that create the characteristic smell and sound.

Sound and Smell

Anatomically, the process is no different from that in humans. Gases accumulate in the rectum. When the pressure reaches a certain level, the sphincter relaxes, and the gases are released outside. The sound depends on the speed of gas exit and the tone of the sphincter muscles. Dog farts can be as quiet as they are deafening.

The smell is a separate story. Most gases are odorless: nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide. The smell is created by sulfur-containing gases, primarily hydrogen sulfide. It is this gas that gives dog farts their characteristic smell of rotten eggs. The more sulfur-containing products (red meat, broccoli, cauliflower) and indigestible proteins are in a dog's diet, the more pungent the fumes will be.

Ranking of the Most Farting Breeds

British researchers conducted a survey among dog owners to determine which breeds fart most often and whose farts are the most臭.

Top 10 breeds by frequency of farting (more than three times a day):

  1. Rottweiler — ninety-five percent (leader in frequency).
  2. Greyhound — ninety percent.
  3. French Bulldog — eighty-eight percent.
  4. English Bulldog — eighty-six percent.
  5. Beagle — eighty-four percent.
  6. King Charles Spaniel — eighty-three percent.
  7. Staffordshire Bull Terrier — eighty-three percent.
  8. Boxer — eighty-two percent.
  9. Border Terrier — eighty-two percent.
  10. Labrador — eighty-two percent.

Top 10 breeds by smelliness (percentage of owners who called the smell unpleasant):

  1. Pomeranian — one hundred percent (leader in offensiveness).
  2. Border Terrier — one hundred percent.
  3. King Charles Spaniel — one hundred percent.
  4. French Bulldog — ninety-eight percent.
  5. Staffordshire Bull Terrier — ninety-seven percent.
  6. Beagle — ninety-five percent.
  7. Poodle Cross — ninety-five percent.
  8. Boxer — ninety-four percent.
  9. Labrador — ninety-four percent.
  10. Golden Retriever — ninety-four percent.

What Affects Farting

The frequency and intensity of farting in dogs depend on several factors.

  • Diet. Cheap foods with a high content of grains, soy, and fillers cause more gas formation. High-fat foods and human treats also contribute to this.
  • Eating speed. Dogs that eat too fast swallow more air. Slow feeders and puzzle feeders help solve the problem.
  • Breed. Brachycephalic breeds (pugs, bulldogs, French Bulldogs) fart more often due to breathing and air swallowing characteristics during eating.
  • Health. Digestive problems, dysbiosis, or parasites can increase gas formation.

When It's a Problem

If a dog farts too often, it may indicate food intolerance, allergy, or gastrointestinal disease. In such cases, it is recommended to change the diet or consult a veterinarian.

Normally, farting is a natural physiological process that should not cause concern.
