Identity crisis is usually discussed in relation to adolescents. But a 10-year-old child also asks important questions: "Who am I?", "What's my place in class?", "Am I cool or a loser?". This is a pre-adolescent crisis associated with the beginning of separation from parents and entering the world of peers. We tell you about the symptoms and ways to help.
At 10 years old, a child's world expands. They have idols from TikTok, authorities from class. The child compares themselves to others: "I don't have an iPhone, so I'm poor," "I can't play football, so I'm a weakling." Also, physiological changes (the beginning of puberty) come into play: some have grown, others are still small.
The child tries on different roles: today they are a goth, tomorrow a sportsman. They often change hobbies, friends, style of clothing. They are afraid of looking silly, fitting in with the majority (for example, listening to the same music as everyone). They are shy around their parents with friends and react sharply to criticism. They may lie about themselves (invent a rich biography).
Don't mock their interests, even if "it will pass." Expand their circle of "experiments": take them to different clubs, allow them to try new things. Support them when they brag, but don't expose them. Don't put labels on them: "You're our humanist," "You're always a nerd." Tell them about your own childhood doubts.
Important: an identity crisis at 10 years old is normal. If it drags on until 12 years old and is accompanied by depression, it's worth consulting a psychologist.
