The attitude towards the United States in the world has significantly deteriorated in recent years. According to surveys, on average, fifty-seven percent of respondents in thirty-six countries have a negative view of the United States. This is particularly pronounced in some states where the level of disapproval reaches eighty percent and above. Below are the countries with the most pronounced negative perception of America.

Turkey and the Middle East

Turkey leads the list of countries with the most negative attitude towards the United States. According to data from the Pew Research Center, about eighty percent of Turkish respondents reported a negative perception of the United States. A similar level of disapproval was recorded on the West Bank of the Jordan River and in East Jerusalem, where eighty percent of those surveyed held a hostile view of the United States. This is due to a long history of political tensions and the perception of American policy in the Middle East as unfair.

Australia and Europe: disillusionment among allies

Especially notable is the sharp decline in sympathy for the United States among traditional allies. Australia demonstrates one of the highest levels of disapproval among developed countries: seventy-six percent of Australians hold a negative view of the United States. This is higher than in the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Spain, and France. Only Sweden, Malaysia, Pakistan, Turkey, and the West Bank of the Jordan River showed higher anti-American sentiment.

In Europe, Sweden leads, where only nineteen percent of the population views the United States positively. Germany and the Netherlands also show a sharp decline: the reliability rating of the United States as a partner has fallen by more than forty percentage points in these countries. Denmark stands out from the rest: eighty-four percent of Danes have a negative view of the United States. For comparison, in November 2025, this figure was seventy percent, and in 2023, only twenty-six percent of Danes considered the United States an ally or a friendly country.

Canada and Mexico: neighbors with the worst relations

Among the nearest neighbors of the United States, the situation is also extremely tense. In Canada, eighty-three percent of respondents in 2022 considered the United States a reliable partner, but by 2026, this figure had fallen to thirty-five percent. Mexico demonstrates one of the highest levels of distrust: ninety-one percent of Mexicans do not trust the American government in global economic issues and international conflicts.

Overall trend

Surveys show that the negative perception of the United States is no longer a reaction to individual political decisions. More often, there is talk of fundamental distrust of the predictability and reliability of Washington as a partner. Even in such countries as Japan, where seventy-six percent considered the United States reliable in 2022, by 2026, this figure had fallen to fifty-nine percent. World public opinion increasingly perceives the United States not as a guardian of stability, but as one of several centers of power that are acting more unilaterally.
