Professional tennis requires ideal conditions. Even a small deviation from the standard can give one player an advantage and kill the other's chances. What are considered "comfortable conditions" for organizing Grand Slam tournaments and the Masters series in 2026? Let's go through the points.

Covering

Clay (Roland Garros): ideal humidity to prevent dust but not slippery. High bounce. Hard (US Open, Australian Open): the surface should provide a consistent bounce without "dead zones". Surface temperature is regulated to prevent sole melting. Grass (Wimbledon): a nightmare for organizers. The surface must be perfectly flat without bumps. Irrigation is strictly metered.

Humidity and air temperature

Ideal temperature for play: +20...+24°C. Humidity: 40-60%. With high humidity, the ball becomes heavy, and players get tired faster. At the Australian Open, they often play in the evening and at night to avoid the 40-degree heat.

Lighting and wind

In 2026, all central courts are equipped with LED lighting without a strobe effect. Brightness is regulated for evening sessions. Ideally, there is no wind. Therefore, stadiums are built with high walls and canopies (like at the Philippe Chatrier Stadium).

Acoustic comfort

The stands should not create an echo. Wall materials absorb noise so that players can hear the ball bounce. Drums and whistles are prohibited, as in football. The requirement for acoustics: the referee on the stand should be able to hear the players without a microphone.
