Wheels, paints, flags, smiles. Thousands of cyclists fill the main streets of the city, blocking traffic for cars. This is not a race, not a competition, but a carnival. The bike carnival is a celebration that erases the boundaries between transport and art, between participant and spectator. In 2026, such carnivals are held in dozens of countries, from Colombia to the Netherlands, from Russia to Vietnam. What is this phenomenon, how did it arise, and how to become a part of it?
The precursor to modern bike carnivals were the "Critical Mass" actions that emerged in San Francisco in 1992. Cyclists gathered on the last Friday of the month to show, with a mass ride, that they were a force to be reckoned with. The actions were political: for cyclists' rights, against car dominance. But gradually the harshness faded, leaving only the carnival. People started to decorate their bikes with flowers, ribbons, play music. In Berlin, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, it turned into a real celebration. Today, the bike carnival is not a protest, but joy. The first large-scale carnival in Russia took place in Moscow in 2016, and by 2026 it had become a tradition in dozens of cities.
The route is usually a loop around the city center, without steep hills. The length is 5-15 km. Speed is not more than 15 km/h. Everyone participates: from children on balance bikes to elderly people on tricycles. The main requirement is brightness. People dress up in costumes, paste tinsel on the frame, attach balloons, hang bells. Contests are often organized: "most creative bike," "best family team," "smallest participant." The final point is a common picnic in the park with music and dancing.
In 2026, bike carnivals actively use the ecological agenda. Participants demonstrate that a bicycle is not only fun but also beneficial for the planet. Many come in T-shirts with slogans "Save the Air," "No exhaust fumes." After the carnival, there is a separate collection of waste. Some actions are timed to Earth Day or World Car-Free Day. The bike carnival becomes visible propaganda for the development of bike infrastructure. The authorities see thousands of cyclists and understand: it is necessary to build roads.
"CicLAvia" in Los Angeles: blocks up to 10 km of streets where you can ride anything (skateboards, skateboards, bicycles). Zones of rest with music are organized. "Houten Fietst" in the Netherlands: a carnival in the city of Houten, where there are more bicycles than residents. "Bogotá's Ciclovía" in Bogotá: not a carnival, but a weekly road closure on Sundays, but sometimes a carnival version with costumes is held. "Moscow Bike Carnival": takes place in the center of Moscow, gathers up to 10,000 participants. "Velo-City" in Lille (France) — a global bike carnival-conference. In 2026, a record bike carnival is expected in Saint Petersburg.
Bike: check brakes, inflate tires, grease the chain. Decorations: flowers (attach to the handlebars), battery-powered garlands (for evening carnivals), flags, stickers. Do not use tape that leaves marks; better silicone fasteners. Costume: comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement. A bright vest for safety. A helmet is required for children (for adults — desirable). Water and a light snack. A charged phone.
Despite the apparent chaos, the carnival has rules: ride in a column, do not overtake leaders, maintain distance, do not use headphones (to hear the commands of volunteers). An instruction is given before the start. Children are only accompanied by adults. Prohibited: alcohol, fireworks, sharp maneuvers. Volunteers in bright vests regulate traffic at intersections, sometimes accompanied by traffic police (by agreement). If you get tired, get off the track and walk.
This is not just fun. It is a boost for the development of bike infrastructure. When the authorities see that thousands of people have come out on bicycles and enjoy it, they allocate money for bike lanes, parking, rentals. The carnival attracts tourists. For example, the Amsterdam bike carnival adds millions of euros to the city's coffers. Moreover, it is an advertisement for a healthy lifestyle. Many participants start riding to work on bicycles after the carnival.
The bike carnival is magic. In everyday life, a bicycle is a means of transportation. On this day, it is a canvas, a mask, a statement. Pedal, smile. The world will become a little kinder.
